Cecil Collins taught at Dartington Hall in the 1930s and he has been described as the greatest visionary painter since William Blake.

His work is remarkable for a naïve and optimistic simplicity which reflected his philosophy and view of life.

I studied with Cecil for several years and like all his pupils benefited greatly from his unusual way of teaching life drawing.

He used music and movement, Chinese ink, red chalk, charcoal and wash to achieve exciting and free-flowing images of the female form.

So popular were Cecil Collins’ ways of teaching that large numbers of students would go early in the morning at the City Lit to be sure of a place in his studio.

Since completing my studies I have taught his methods both here in the UK and in schools and colleges in the US.
